In today’s market, it’s more important than ever for small-scale soap and cosmetic brands to focus on ethical and sustainable production. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the environmental impact of the products they use, and they want brands to do their part in preserving the planet. According to Mintel, in the UK, 79% of adults feel personal care brands need to put more effort into ethical and sustainable production.
By producing eco-friendly products, small businesses can show that they care about more than just making a profit. They can build a loyal customer base who will appreciate their dedication to sustainability.
Here are 5 tips for making your soap and cosmetic business more ethical and sustainable:
1. Use natural ingredients – One way to make your soap and cosmetic products more sustainable is to use natural ingredients instead of synthetic ones. Synthetic ingredients are often derived from petroleum or other non-renewable resources, which can be harmful to the environment. Natural ingredients, on the other hand, are renewable and biodegradable. They also tend to be gentler on the skin than synthetic ingredients.
2. Packaging – Another way to make your products more sustainable is to reduce or eliminate packaging. If you do need to use packaging, opt for materials that are recyclable or biodegradable. Avoid using plastic whenever possible. If you must use plastic, make sure it’s a material that is fully recyclable such as PET or RPET.
3. Energy-efficient production – Making your production process more energy-efficient is another great way to reduce your environmental impact. There are a number of ways to do this, such as installing solar panels, only purchasing renewable energy from your energy provider or using LED lighting. Every little bit helps!
4. Local sourcing – Using locally sourced ingredients is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. It also supports local farmers and businesses, which is always a plus.
5. Give back – One final way to make your soap and cosmetic business more sustainable is to give back to the environment in some way. This could mean planting trees, supporting environmental causes, or donating money or products to sustainability initiatives. This could be stacked on top of all the other ways that you create a more eco-friendly and sustainable business of course 🙂
No matter what you choose to do, giving back is a great way to show that you care about preserving our planet!
